Trocnov Theater Festival: The Professor on the Prowl

About the performance

A wonderful comedy whose themes—marriage, love, and infidelity—remain relevant and timeless!

What man—whether a gentleman, a grown man, or a young man—wouldn’t want to be successful, talented, and constantly surrounded by admiring women? Come see for yourself.

Running time: 100 minutes, including an intermission

Directed by: Věra Hlaváčková

Set and Costumes: Miroslav Mareš

The main character of this charming comedy is the aging piano virtuoso and teacher Gustav Heink, who likes to play the role of an irresistible seducer, yet often succumbs to the charms of his female students. Not only does the famous maestro’s wise wife, Marie, successfully join the fray, but so does the somewhat eccentric husband of the young student Delfína Jurová, Professor Jura. Although Gustav’s wife suspects how actively her other half is hosting private piano concerts, since she is a very wise and patient woman, she waits for the right moment to strike back. The cast is rounded out not only by a love-struck maid, but also by the caretakers of the cottage in question, the Pollingers—she an exemplary housekeeper, he perpetually “under the influence.” And so there is no shortage of humorous situations.

The renowned Austrian author Hermann Bahr adapted this timeless theme into his classic Viennese comedy as early as 1909. The adaptation of this more than century-old text and the direction were undertaken by Věra Hlaváčková, a leading member of the South Bohemian Theater’s drama troupe, who has already staged numerous plays with Mareš’s theater company to the delight of audiences. Thanks to the setting of the story during the Art Nouveau period, the audience will also be treated to a view of the elegant costumes of that era.

The Sword and Man 2 Conference: Selected Chapters on the History of Swords and People

The aim of the conference is to discuss the role of the sword in human history. What is a sword? When did the sword first appear in our region? What social context is the sword associated with? What is the symbolic role of the sword in various historical eras? How were swords made and how were they used? Did the status of the sword in Central Europe differ from that of swords in Asia? These and many other questions will be discussed at the second interdisciplinary conference, which will follow up on the conference of the same name held in 2022. The third day of the conference, October 3, 2026, will also feature an accompanying program for the general public at the Visitor and Education Center.
